About the position 

The Australian High Commission in Nigeria is seeking expressions of interest for the position of Honorary Consul for Australia in Lagos. The Honorary Consul assists Australian citizens and supports Australia's interests in Nigeria in consultation with the Australian High Commission in Abuja. 

This expression of interest forms part of DFAT's routine appointment and review process. Honorary Consul positions are periodically tested through an open EOI process to ensure transparency and to assess the availability of suitably qualified candidates.

Key functions 

The Honorary Consul may: 

• Provide consular assistance to Australian citizens on behalf of the Australian High Commission. 

• Assist with passport services, including conducting passport interviews once accredited by the Australian Passport Office. 

• Maintain contact with the Australian community in Lagos and surrounding areas. 

• Support the High Commission during consular emergencies or crises involving Australians. 

• Maintain effective relationships with Nigerian government authorities and other local stakeholders on matters relevant to Australia's interests. 

• Assist with administrative arrangements for visiting Australian officials. 

• Support Australia's commercial, cultural, educational and public diplomacy interests in Nigeria. 

• Undertake representational and ceremonial duties as requested by the Australian High Commission. 

Selection criteria 

Applicants should: 

• Be an Australian citizen, or a non-Australian with a strong personal connection to Australia. 

• Be a long-term resident of Lagos and intend to remain in Nigeria for at least five years.  

• Have a strong professional reputation and well-established networks within government, business, professional or community circles. 

• Be fluent in English. 

• Possess office accommodation of an appropriate professional standard, including suitable security and facilities for conducting official Honorary Consul business.  

• Be of independent means and not financially dependent on the honorarium provided by the Australian Government.  

• Have sufficient time and capacity to undertake the responsibilities of the role in addition to their existing professional commitments. 

• Have strong organisational, communication and stakeholder-engagement skills. 

• Be willing to undergo probity screening and provide a police clearance. 

• Not hold a consular commission for another country or a government position that could create an actual, perceived or potential conflict of interest.
